Art and Craft Movement in the North West logo

Arts and Crafts Interiors

The Victorian owner of Bramall Hall, Charles Nevill, initiated an extensive programme of improvements and changes to the Hall’s interiors and the surrounding parkland.

Charles Nevill commissioned a local designer and architect to assist him called George Faulkner Armitage. Armitage had eclectic ideas when it came to his designs and was strongly influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement. The influence of such is still clearly evident in Bramall Hall today.

image of door furniturePioneered by Ruskin and William Morris, the Arts and Crafts Movement dominated interior design during the second half of the 19th century and is recognisable by its simplicity of form, organic motis, honesty and functionality.

At Bramall Hall these influences are everywhere and to help you experience these treasures is a special audio-tour highlighting the best of the Nevill-Armitage partnership and their 19th century embellishments to a medieval manor.

The audio-tour is available from the front desk and is included in the price of admission.
