Experience Sessions

Pupils learn about life in the Hall through a tour delivered by our trained staff. Using a mixture of question and answer sessions and hands on activities pupils are fully engaged and work in small groups to ensure maximum benefit. For a Tudor Experience there are nine activities to choose from, subject to availability, each designed to give pupils an insight into life in Tudor times, and specifically the lives of the Davenport household.

For a Victorian Experience pupils learn about life “above and below stairs”, looking at the work of the servants and the leisure time of rich children.

Touching the Past

What were people’s homes like over 100 years ago? In this session children can look at the similarities and differences between their home and that of a child living at the end of the 19 th century. This interactive tour offers plenty of hands-on experiences, including the chance for all the children to play with some Victorian toys. They will learn what it was like to do the washing with a dolly tub and wash board, and find out what rich Victorians carried in their suitcases.

Stories Old and New

Using the Hall as a backdrop, children will listen to, and become a part of some well known stories – and some unusual ones - as they travel round the building. Lead by a facilitator in costume this is a great way to introduce children to the idea of visiting an historic house.

Who ate all my porridge?

The Davenport Tudor Christmas

Pupils can experience life in a busy Tudor household as they ready themselves for the Yuletide in this special session. They will meet members of the Davenport family, and some of their servants, as they travel through the Hall.
The visit gives a valuable insight into the different roles of people in the 16th century and culminates in the pupils performing a play to Dame Dorothy or Sir William.
